Aurora
... a small town offering the Best of Most World's! Located in the heart
of Richland Township, Aurora is full of friendly faces and interesting
places. Happy times await you - whether its fishing, hunting, sailing,
powerboating, fossil finding or simply relaxing.
Situated along the peaceful, protected shores of South Creek, a tributary of
the Pamlico River, and only about 5 miles from the Intercoastal
Waterway, the area is a safe haven for pleasure sailboats, powerboats
and commercial vessels. Several housing developments are located along
the many, many miles of waterfront property. The living is easy and the
climate is moderate with a mean annual temperature of 62 degrees, an
average rainfall of 50 inches and snowfall averages 3 - 3 1/2 inches per
year.
Wildlife is
abundant throughout the area. Hunting includes bear, whitetail deer,
duck and quail. Just restfully riding the roads observing unique and
majestic birds, animals and wildflowers is a delightful way to spend the
day.
There is a wealth of history surrounding the area. Its path leads back
millions of years. The
Aurora Fossil Museum showcases this history with several one-of-a-kind
exhibits and presentations. Spend the day across from the museum
hunting fossils at the "fossil dig" pile and learning about fossils at
the new education center. The Chamber of Commerce also sponsors the
Aurora Fossil Festival every year during Memorial Day weekend.
Aurora is very proud of its services. The Town Hall is a restored historic
home. Modern, well trained police, fire and rescue departments provide
around the clock protection for the area.
Beaufort County Hospital provides local health care through the Aurora
Medical Center. Along with
Beaufort County Hospital in Washington, there is
Craven Regional Medical Center located in New Bern and both are a mere 30
minutes away. Pitt
County Memorial Hospital, located in Greenville - about an hour from
Aurora - offers an ever expanding university teaching hospital complex.
Richland Township is the home of numerous civic organizations and churches of
many denominations serving the needs of the community.
